Greatest ever Falcon?

Postby UKFalcon » Fri Apr 04, 2014 8:20 am

So, as a relatively new fan of the sport and the Falcons and being from the UK, I'm eager to hear and learn about who are the greats of the past and present, and what in your opinion, made/makes them great?

There's the short answer.

Why are you a falc fan? I had a little red helmet when I was five, so I picked ATL.

Sorry for brevity, but have to get to work; will check back in to add some thoughts later.

To the why are you a Falcon question I stumbled across the Falcon's catching a Seattle Seahawks game (first live NFL game ever) and fell in love with the sport and the Falcons. A lot of it had to do with Craig "Iron Head" Heyward (RIP) bit I just liked the Falcons (and they where playing against the Seahawks which helped - I'm in the Portland area so not generally a fan of Seattle teams).

I can't speak for the Falcon greats before the 90's but some of my favorite Falcons growing up are: Jessie Tuggle, Bob Whitfield, Lester Archambeau, Patrick Kerney, Chris Chandler, Terance Mathis, Chuck Smith, John Abraham, Jamal Anderson, Alge Crumpler, Keith Brooking, Brian Finneran (not great but I loved that guy). There are others but those are some of my favorites.

Ironically I don't have many players on the current roster or even recent seasons that I'm a huge fan of. On the active roster I'd probably have to go with Worrilow, Bartu, Babineaux, Biermann, and Trufant. Mostly the lunch pail guys that work hard and have found success with Atlanta even if it isn't star/superstar status.

Oh and you can't forget the most bad-ass punter in the game today Matt Bosher. Don't cross that dude because he'll cut you.

Had some family in GA... Watched a couple games, and saw how much more exciting the Falcons were than the NY Giants and Jets were,,,, thus a NY Falcons fan

I think you could make a compelling argument for:

Tommy Nobis
Claude Humphrey
Deion Sanders
Mike Kenn
Jessie Tuggle

as the greatest Falcon players ever. Maybe in 5 years, you could add Matt Ryan to that list. Deion is probably the best player to ever don a Falcon uniform (Eric Dickerson withstanding), although Kenn probably had the best career as a Falcon, followed by Humphrey and Nobis.

I became a Falcon fan in '91 because I found out Brian Jordan was my cousin (like 2nd twice removed or something). And they also had Deion and MC Hammer was all about them then, so it was easily to support them.

Pudge you have it about right!!

Claude Humphrey was a little different; he beat the hell out of everyone and would step on someone's head rather than take a sack. He was really mean. He didn't get help from anyone and didn't need it.

Yea Kenn had great technique, and that gave him a long career!!

No telling about Nobis or Humphrey since their teams were horrible every year!!

Finally I'll throw in Jeff Van Note, people never thought he was great, but you don't last 17 seasons with one team at center, without having something!!

Jeff Van Note and Steve Bartkowski have to be in the conversation. Bartkowski threw one of the prettiest deep balls ever.

I wasn't around during the Bartkowski years, so I don't know first hand, but have heard a lot of hearsay. Bartkowski certainly is in the congo for Top 10 Falcons ever just like William Andrews. BUt i don't know if he's in the conversation for best Falcon ever. I don't even know if Jessie Tuggle is really in that conversation really, just needed a 5th guy and he seemed to have a slightly better resume (because he was mistakenly left off the All-90s team).

We've talked about this before, But I think you can make the case that Matt Ryan in 6 years has matched or surpassed what Bartkowski did in 10 years. That's why I say Ryan 5 years from now we might be considering Ryan the greatest Falcon ever. My suspicion is that when Ryan reaches 10 years of playing, it won't even be close.

Alfred Jenkins and Wallace Francis might beg to differ. :)

Jenkins is one of my all-time favorites.

I think Deion Sanders is the best Falcon ever..... In addition to leading the all time team for interceptions run back for Touchdowns; his punt returning, was great!! Ryan is already the best Qb, Bart sucked his first 5 years;

Oh year Deion was pretty good at kickoffs too; he played some receiver during his career too.

He had a lot of yards and interception and points..... He was on the team long enough for management to really screw up!!

No body played as many positions with greatness!!
