Apparently the Falcons do think they are going to stop some teams on third down this year. Holliday and now Hester. Hmmm.

Would be a much better addition than Holliday and can push HD for his #3 spot. Could we actually have a competition in training camp? I understand this is premature but say Hester overtakes HD in camp, would HD become expendable, $3M is a lot to pay for a #4 WR.

Finally, I'd love to see Hester sign with Atlanta on a 2-3 deal. He can not just serve as a kick return but can also add depth the receiver chart.

I would imagine he could beat out HD and $3 million for a #4 receiver on the depth chart is a bit pricey. That could lead to HD getting released or re-worked if they like him that much.

“Coach Trestman wanted me for receiver, but I told him I’d rather just focus on kickoff and punt returns.”-Devin Hester, Sun Sentinel

Well, that kills that idea. At least it seems Atlanta is looking for another receiver.

This might be an interesting signing. His stats in domes last year were:

Kick returns
12 - 315 yards
Punt returns
5 - 25 yards

Considering his attitude and past performance, he'd make a decent #4 WR option. Giving him extensive snaps as a# 2 or 3 option seems to hurt his explosiveness as a returner. I think a fair deal would be 2 years for $4.5 million with half guaranteed.

I'd only guarantee around $1 million for a guy that primarily returns kicks and has limited use outside of that. Probably more like 2 years @ $3 million w/$1 million (tops) guaranteed.

ESPN is reporting that Hester is looking for 4 million a year. If the report is valid there is no way in hell I would pay a 32 year old return specialist 4 million a year. In the immortal words of Aubrey Graham, "Dont do it, please dont do it".

Devin Hester is heading to Atlanta.

Hester, who became perhaps the best return man in NFL history during his eight years in Chicago, has agreed to a new contract with the Falcons. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it’s a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old Hester is the NFL’s all-time record holder in kick return touchdowns, and last year he led the league in kickoff return yards. Hester has also played wide receiver and even played some cornerback early in his NFL career, but the Bears had him exclusively on special teams last year, and that will presumably be his role in Atlanta as well.

Last year the Falcons had Jacquizz Rodgers returning kickoffs and Robert McClain and Harry Douglas returning punts. Hester should provide an upgrade to Atlanta’s special teams.

I wonder how much he ended up signing for... $4 million a year would be insane for a team that can't get off the field on 3rd down.

I can't find the amount, but the fact that it is for 3 years, makes me nervous that we've overpaid.

It is all in how it is structured. I have learned to ignore the overall numbers, and frankly, the yearly numbers, until I see what is guaranteed and how the bonuses are structured. It could be a year to year deal with everything in Roster Bonuses with no cap hit if he isn't here.

Hester ended up costing $9 million over 3 years. No details on structure yet.

Suffice to say I believe Atlanta over paid.

3 years $9 million with a $2.5 million signing bonus. My guess is that its heavily back loaded so that he could be cut after the upcoming season without killing us too badly. Im not excited about this amount of money, but I am not totally bummed either. Depends on the structure really.
