Extensions all around

Postby AngryJohnny51 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 1:58 pm

The Atlanta Falcons continued to look ahead toward the immediate future Monday by announcing contract extensions for head coach Mike Smith, vice president Rich McKay and general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Mike Smith
Mike Smith posted a 4-12 record this season after coaching Atlanta to the playoffs in four of the previous five years.

McKay received a four-year extension through 2019, while both Smith and Dimitroff received one-year extensions.

"We are fortunate to have talented key leaders at the Falcons who are dedicated to a common goal of being a league leader on and off the field," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement released by the team. "I have great respect for the skills and commitment of Rich, Thomas and Smitty, and I look forward to continuing to support and work with them in the years to come."

There was talk of McKay possibly returning to Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers made wholesale changes to their front office. Instead, Blank locked up McKay for years to come.

Dimitroff recently enhanced his personnel department by adding his former boss in New England, Scott Pioli, as assistant general manager. Dimitroff expressed confidence in having a strong front office with himself, Pioli, and director of player personnel Lionel Vital leading the way.

Both Blank and Dimitroff expressed support for Smith through the Falcons' dismal 4-12 season. It was Smith's first losing season since taking over the team in 2008.

Smith previously had signed a three-year contract extension in February 2011 with one year remaining on his original four-year deal. Smith was making $2.2 million per year prior to the initial extension.

The 54-year-old Smith is 60-36 in six years with the Falcons, who have reached the playoffs four times over that stretch.

Doesnt really change anything if Smith had a good year in 14 he will be there in 15 anyway and if he disappoints again he will be fired.

Well, it needed to be done. Can't have a lame duck head coach. But otherwise…

I really dont get it though becasue a one year extension does not do anything to change the perception that Mike Smith is coaching for his job next year. Did they do this so that his lame duck status wouldnt make possible FA acquisitions wary of signing a potential deal here?

You do it because while it doesn't change the perception a whole lot, it does change it somewhat. Players know that Smith isn't on the firmest of ground, but the ground he's on now is a lot firmer than it would be if they had not given him the extension.

It's the dreaded vote of confidence. Smitty is coaching for his job next year. Though I think TD is safe no matter what, right or wrong. And I'm not sure what McKay even does......so it doesn't matter.

Though I am thinking Pioli will contribute over time.

I would suspect that until McKay decides to move on he won't be going anywhere. He's more or less Blank's bench coach/drinking buddy to take a baseball term.

Plus McKay's position as chairman of the Competition Committee gives the Falcons some extra power in the NFL and he was part of the CBA negotiations. McKay may not have been a spectacular GM but he is a power broke in the Executive branch of the NFL and that makes him a valuable piece of the Falcon franchise.

At one point McKay was heir apparent to the NFL Commissioner before Goodell took over.
