Butchie Wallace signs with Falcons

By Anthony Hanshew
The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- It didn't take long for Butchie Wallace's World Bowl performance to pay dividends.

The former Marshall University running back signed a two-year, $650,000 free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, according to Wallace's agent, Harold Lewis. Wallace earned World Bowl MVP honors on Sunday after rushing for 143 yards and a touchdown in Frankfurt's NFL Europe title game victory.

Wallace spent two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before being released. He joined Frankfurt during the regular season and became an offensive focal point down the stretch.

"He's kind of a combo back and I guess that worked really well in NFL Europe," Lewis said. "He dominated."

NFL teams took notice and Lewis received numerous inquiries early this week. The Miami Dolphins called as late as Friday, but Wallace had signed with the Falcons, where he'll join former Thundering Herd teammate Chris Crocker.

"We got solicited pretty hard after that," Lewis said. "But with the Atlanta Falcons, there are going to be some changes in the backfield. And when you look at the offense they run, it fits perfectly. He's not like (undersized back) Warrick Dunn or (power back T.J.) Duckett, but he's right in between."

Cobb seems to have one foot in the grave and another on the metaphorical banana peel.

Although I am sure the deal is very cap friendly and he won't count against the roster for a while, but the Cobb experiment seems less and less like it will be continued.

Excellent signing!!! I watched him play all his home games this year, and he really is a hard nosed runner, with a great burst of speed after hitting the hole. He really tore it up in the World Bowl...if you get a chance check it out on the "Football network"...

It is starting to sound like Duckett has one foot out the door. Drafting of Norwood and now the signing of Wallace. If Duckett has a bad camp or is out of shape he could get the axe.

That sounds good to me, although, I would prefer trading him prior to him showing up out of shape or having a bad camp & just releasing him. Even a 6th round pick for him wouldn't be too bad IMO.

Anderson was a 7th Round pick. So that was more luck than anything else.
