How much is Falcons QB Matt Ryan worth?

Sometime between now and the start of the regular season -- maybe even before training camp starts later this week -- I fully expect the Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Matt Ryan to agree to a long-term contract extension.

The Falcons want it to happen and Ryan wants it to happen. About the only question remaining is how much Ryan is worth.

The money may be astronomical, but I think this snapshot of the top-10 average quarterback salaries makes it pretty clear what Ryan’s new deal will look like:

Aaron Rodgers, $22 million

Joe Flacco, $20.1 million

Drew Brees, $20 million

Peyton Manning, $19.2 million

Tony Romo, $18 million

Matthew Stafford, $17.6 million

Eli Manning, $16.25 million

Matt Schaub, $15.5 million

Philip Rivers $15.3 million

Jay Cutler and Ben Roethlisberger tied at $14.7 million.

Ryan, who has averaged $11.25 million per year on his rookie deal, is going to end up in the top five. There’s even a chance he could jump all the way to No. 1.

The top four guys all have Super Bowl rings. Ryan obviously doesn’t. But he’s only 28 and his side can make the argument he has championships in his future.

Ryan should be somewhere around Stafford/Romo money in the $16-$18 million a year range. I suspect that he will crack the $20 million a year range given his prior season and age.

It certainly doesn't hurt that the Falcons where oh-so-close to a Super Bowl that was very winnable. If Atlanta came out on top Ryan would probably be getting a contract close to Rodgers contract.

Ryan will get 20 million a year. If he gets less than that, I'd give big kudos to TD for making a great deal, and kudos to Ryan for understanding that if he wants to win, he will need people around him that aren't scrubs.

I'm guessing in the 17-18M range, written very "Patriot-like" as too leave money to sign other players in the near future as well. The Flacco contract has decimated the Ravens and he doesn't really seem to care. He's almost in denial about it. I can't see Ryan or TD going down that same path.

Ryan will get his, and he deserves it, but I don't think it will be a franchise crippler.

$20 million. If Ryan would've signed for less than that, IMO he would have already been signed by now.
