Advanced NFL Stats has a cool little feature that plots teams based on their Expected Points Added on both offense and defense. When you open up their page, you see this year's graph on the front page. Well since the 2012 season is over they also have charted every team since 2000.
It's interesting to look at the Falcons past teams, as apparently the 2002 team was the most balanced team we've had (second only to this year's team) in terms of having a quality offense and defense. The '02 team's defense was better than our current one, but this year's offense is better than that one. Probably one of the reasons why a lot of people like to play revisionist history with Reeves/Vick.
If check "All" to play every team since 2000, it's interesting to note the "outliers" the teams that really stood out.
The 2007 Patriots and 2011 Saints outpace everyone offensively. The 2000 Ravens defense stands above all the rest. The 2012 Cardinals get the worst offense, and the 2008 Lions (0-16 team) are the worst combo of offense/defense of all.
The 3 worst teams overall would be the 2000 Browns, 2008 Lions, and 2009 Lions. The 3 best teams would be the 2001 Rams, 2007 Patriots, and 2009 Packers. Interestingly enough, none of those teams won the Super Bowl in those years.
