The Bills announced that they released DE-OLB Shawne Merriman on Monday.
Merriman, 28, is coming off an Achilles injury that landed him on injured reserve after five games last season. In those five games, Merriman had nine tackles and one sack.
The Bills claimed Merriman off waivers from San Diego in 2010, but he did not play a game for Buffalo that season.
From 2005-07, Merriman was one of the league’s best players. He had 39½ sacks in those three seasons with the Chargers, including 17 in 2006 in only 12 games. Injuries ravaged Merriman’s career, however. From 2008-11, he played in 23 games and had five sacks.
According to Adam Caplan of The Sideline View, the Bills would have owed Merriman $4 million in base salary if he was on the Week One roster.
The way we see it
It’s unfortunate for Merriman that he never could regain the explosion we saw early in his career, when he established himself as an elite pass rusher. Each of the past two offseasons, there was hype in Buffalo about Merriman returning to form, but it was only that — hype. The Bills have plenty of depth at defensive end with the additions of Mario Williams and Chris Kelsay. It’s possible that a 3-4 team could take a flier on Merriman as a situational pass rusher.
