APLast year, the Chiefs lost starting safety Eric Berry in Week One. This year, the team’s other starting safety has an injury, before the real games even start.

Kendrick Lewis injured his right shoulder on Saturday night against the Rams. Arm in a sling, he’s out indefinitely.

Coach Romeo Crennel said after the game only that Lewis will miss “a bit of time” and that injured reserve is not an option at this point for Lewis.

“He has to have no surgery or anything like that, but he has to rest that shoulder and immobilize it a little bit before we can start movement,” Crennel said, via the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, cornerback Brandon Carr is gone and cornerback Brandon Flowers hasn’t practiced since July 31 due to a bruised heel.

Lewis started every game in 2011. Without him, Abram Elam likely moves to the top of the depth chart.

Lewis isn't particularly good, at least he hasn't been the past year or so. They lose nothing with Elam in the lineup. But it's just another example of why you set yourself up for disaster if you don't have 3 proven safeties.

The biggest downfall for the Chiefs in 2011 was that they had too many players miss too many games. And the 2012 Chiefs got a bad start turning that around on Monday when it was announced that linebacker Tamba Hali was suspended for the first game of the season.

The Chiefs are scheduled to take on the potentially high-powered Falcons in Week 1, and losing Hali is a huge blow to a KC defense that played particularly well down the stretch under interim (and now full-time) coach Romeo Crennel.
