Chances for draftees Coale, Johnson to make team "hampered" by lengthy pre-season ailments, Garrett says

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the chances for receiver Danny Coale and safety Matt Johnson to make the team’s 53-man roster are “certainly hampered” if they miss a second consecutive pre-season game Saturday against San Diego, which appears likely.

Coale has battled foot and quad injuries. Johnson recently was cleared after a hamstring injury. Neither player made the trip to Oakland for Monday’s 3-0 victory and Garrett said the team will wait and judge both draft picks when they are full strength. But their inability to stay on the field during training camp has cost them opportunities to impress coaches that have gone to other players.

“Any time you miss a practice or a pre-season game, … you certainly hurt your chances to impress coaches with what your role might be on this football team,” Garrett said. “We feel good about both of those guys. That’s why we drafted them. From the little bit we’ve seen them in spring or in training camp, we’ve liked what we’ve seen. But they’re way behind … The window of opportunity to evaluate them shortens. But still you have to do that evaluation when they are healthy.”

Yeah I saw this yesterday and went  . IIWII I suppose, he's hardly practiced. He's just now back from the broken metatarsel in his foot, but its not like any of the other dudes hunting for that #3 job have but so well. But 53 is hard to get to, so I'm rooting for him.

Noooooow, if he gets cut we should make a phone call imo. Have you seen Jarrett Boykin tearing up the preseason for the Packers? Somehow Jax was stupid enough to cut him, and of course a smart team like GB that can actually evaulate deeper talent grabbed him. He had another great game last night, and was always a guy that played faster than his 40. He should have been drafted.

Yeah, if the Cowboys waive/injured Coale, the Falcons should jump all over that. I would much rather have him as the No. 4 WR than Meier.
